We Nepalese have had a deep connection, trust, and respect with the hills, mountains, and peaks for centuries. Nepal is also known as the "Capital of Mountains." Therefore, the International Mountain Day, observed on December 11, is particularly significant for us.
In your opinion, what is the most important step to preserve the biodiversity of Nepal’s Himalayan region?
Significance
Mountains and Environment: Mountains provide 60-80% of the world's freshwater, host unique ecosystems, and are home to about 15% of the global population.
Cultural Importance: They are culturally significant for many communities and serve as popular destinations for recreation and tourism.
Sustainability Challenges: Mountains are vulnerable to climate change, deforestation, and overexploitation, which impacts biodiversity and local livelihoods.
The 2025 International Mountain Day theme, “Glaciers matter for water, food and livelihoods in mountains and beyond,” highlights the importance of glaciers. When glaciers melt, water supply from the mountains to the plains is affected, agriculture can decline, and the daily lives of mountain communities become more vulnerable. Therefore, protecting glaciers is not only important for the mountains but also for our overall life, nature, and future generations.
