International Literacy Day: Nepal Aims for 'Literate Nepal' by Next Year

Kathmandu. Today, September 8, is the 60th International Literacy Day. In 1965, UNESCO declared every September 8 to be celebrated as World Literacy Day.

Although most local levels have become literate due to the nationwide campaign to eradicate illiteracy from the country for the past decade and a half, illiteracy still persists in 112 local levels. So far, 68 districts have been declared fully literate, while Dolpa in Karnali Province and all eight districts of Madhesh Province are yet to be declared literate. Specifically, out of a total of 136 local levels in Madhesh Province, only 25 have been declared fully literate so far, while another 25 are in the final stages of being declared literate.
