Gen Z Movement's Anniversary: Calls for Societal Transformation Unmet

Kathmandu. Debates are ongoing about the spirit and essence of the Gen Z movement, which marks one year since its protests demanding good governance, corruption control, Nepo Kids, and the removal of social media bans. The powerful government of the Congress-UML alliance collapsed due to the momentum of the movement, and the country's leadership also changed after elections held under the government led by former Chief Justice Sushila Karki. However, the question remains: is the country moving in the direction of societal transformation according to the sacrifices, spirit, and aspirations of the young generation who protested with demands for good governance? Old party leaders say that despite the passage of one year since the change, there has not been as much discussion, deliberation, and progress on these issues as there should have been.

According to Surendra Pandey, former Vice-Chairman of the CPN-UML and former Finance Minister, it is a matter of concern that the country has not moved in the direction of societal transformation according to the spirit and aspirations, even after one year has passed since the movement by the young generation demanding good governance and other issues. 'The main demand put forward by Gen Z is that society should be transformed,' Pandey said, 'but it was not about replacing one party with another and one ruler with another, but about transforming society according to that spirit.'
