Pay Heed To Sacrifices

May Nepal never see such a day ever again, where innocent lives were taken, public and private properties went up in flames, families anxiously awaited news of their loved ones, and an entire generation had to come out onto the streets to be heard. Yesterday, Nepal marked its first Gen Z Martyrs’ Day, commemorating the events that took place on September 8 and 9, 2025. After the nation observes this day with tribute, it is worth asking ourselves what exactly we are remembering and what we have learned. For the youth of Nepal, September 8 is a day filled with pride and tragedy. It is the day that marked the bravery of a generation that fought for good governance, accountability and the end of corruption. But it was also a day of terrible cost. A total of 76 people were killed during the two-day protest. These families lost their children. Forty-five individuals have been declared martyrs officially, 42 as 'Gen Z Governance Warriors' and three as immortalised police personnel.
