Rasuwa's Himalayan System Faces Escalating Disasters Linked to Climate Change and Geological Instability

An unexpected flood in the Bhote Koshi of Rasuwa in July 2025 jolted the Himalayan life and infrastructure from Tatopani to Rasuwagadhi. At that time, the flood was linked to the sudden release of water from a glacial lake formed in the upper Himalayan region. Less than a year later, on August 26, 2026, an even more devastating event occurred in the same extensive Himalayan system.

This time, the flood in the Bhote Koshi-Trishuli corridor caused human casualties, along with significant damage to houses, bridges, roads, and hydropower projects. According to the latest government figures, over 1,385 people have died and more than 5,130 are missing in this disaster, with the initial estimate of physical damage reaching Rs. 387.5 billion.
