Mitigating Looming Threats Of GLOFs

Threats from glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) have loomed large for quite a long time. GLOFs occur when a violent release of water from glacial lakes suddenly takes place in catastrophic proportions. Earthquakes, heavy rain, rockfalls or excessive water pressure can break weak dams behind which meltwater from glacial lakes has accumulated, resulting in violent outbursts of glacial lakes.
