Biratnagar. Despite record timber and firewood production in government and community forests of Koshi Province, sales have not kept pace, leading to a potential waste of forest produce. The ample production and potential of timber in the forests are hampered by the inability of domestic timber to compete in the market, increasing the risk of timber decaying in depots and storage yards.
The delay in timber sales also impacts the provincial government's internal revenue collection. While domestic forest resources are decaying, the market for imported materials like plastic, aluminum, and UPVC, used as alternatives to timber, is rapidly expanding.
