Protests Test Government’s Credibility

The Balendra Shah–led government entered office with one of the strongest public mandates for change in recent years. Voters expected a break from old politics, cleaner governance, quicker decisions, and an administration willing to confront corruption, bureaucratic inertia, and political patronage. Those expectations remain alive, but they are now colliding with a different reality. Teachers, doctors, farmers, civil servants, business owners, students, journalists, landless settlers, and other groups have all taken to the streets, exposing a widening gap between public hope and government performance.
