Prosperity Sans Presence Is Meaningless

Every evening, Kathmandu’s streets are filled with the quiet hum of luxury electric vehicles. Those are glittering symbols of a modern, changing Nepal. Yet, the capital’s comforts are largely bought with distant sacrifices: a father who has not held his child’s hand for years, or a daughter spending her youth in the blistering heat of a foreign land to keep the lights on at home. Nepal appears to be moving forward economically, but it is simultaneously losing something irreplaceable: the physical presence of its people. We are becoming a nation that acquires material comforts while buckling under the emotional weight of separation. As we participate in global consumption, we must ask a critical question: Are we losing the human connections and domestic stability that give true meaning to prosperity?
