Kathmandu. On the occasion of Ashadh Shukla Purnima, Guru Purnima is being celebrated across the country today by expressing respect towards the Gurus who impart Gayatri, initiation and Vedic mantras and provide education.
According to Tantra Shastra and Dharma Shastra, the meaning of 'Gu' is darkness and 'Ru' is light. A personality who destroys the darkness of ignorance with the light of knowledge is called a Guru. The scriptures also recognize the Guru as Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshwar. Like parents, Gurus are also considered gods, and it is said, 'Acharyadevo Bhava'.
