Sri Lanka Deploys Troops to Control Prison Riot; One Inmate Dead, Six Injured

Colombo. Sri Lanka deployed hundreds of soldiers and special commandos on Sunday to control a riot at a prison with more than its capacity of inmates. One inmate died and six were injured in the incident.

According to Deputy Inspector General of Police Sanjeev Medawatte, the situation that arose after inmates vandalized various buildings at the Mahara Prison near the capital Colombo on Saturday has been brought under control. "Armed forces and Special Task Force (STF) commandos were assisted to restore law and order and return the inmates to their cells," Medawatte told reporters outside the prison.
