Nepal Medical Association Addresses Misinformation on Social Media Regarding Medical Practice

Kathmandu. The Nepal Medical Association has expressed its serious concern over the misleading and baseless news being disseminated on various social media platforms recently regarding the association. The association, issuing a press release on Monday, urged the general public not to fall for such misleading information. Citing Section 27 (1) of the Nepal Medical Council Act, 2020, the press release stated that no person can use a degree, diploma, or license that they have not obtained to practice modern medicine. The association clarified that only doctors who have obtained appropriate medical education and completed the legal process to register with the Nepal Medical Council are constitutionally allowed to practice modern medicine. The Nepal Medical Association also made it clear that it will always stand firm against 'anti-quackery,' meaning treatment by illegal and incompetent individuals. The association has expressed concern over the recent trend of non-physicians practicing medicine and prescribing medication through social media. Stating that such activities can adversely affect the health of the general public, the association urged the public to seek treatment and prescriptions only from doctors who have obtained an official degree and are registered with the Medical Council. Similarly, the association has also appealed to the concerned bodies to cooperate in solving the problems seen in the registration of doctors and health workers due to a lack of coordination among various health sector-related councils.
