Government to Close Five Nepali Diplomatic Missions Abroad

Kathmandu. The government has moved to close five Nepali diplomatic missions abroad. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has clarified that the offices will be fully closed only after ensuring a reliable alternative arrangement for the services provided by those missions. At a regular press conference held at the Ministry on Friday, spokesperson Lok Bahadur Poudel Chhetri informed about the government's latest decision, stating that preparations are underway to close the Nepali embassies in Brazil, Denmark, and South Africa, as well as the Nepali consulates general in San Francisco, USA, and Chengdu, China. According to spokesperson Chhetri, work is being done to ensure that consular and other services provided to Nepali citizens and foreigners in those regions are not disrupted. 'The government has decided to close the Nepali embassies in Brazil, Denmark, and South Africa, and the Nepali consulates general in San Francisco and Chengdu,' said spokesperson Chhetri. He informed that before closing the missions, efforts are being made to ensure effective and reliable service availability for Nepali citizens, other service recipients, and concurrently accredited countries in the respective regions. 'The issue of reducing or increasing the number of missions is related to the government's short-term management,' he added, 'In the future, as the government's financial capacity expands, diplomatic presence will also expand according to needs and possibilities.' The Ministry claims that although the government has decided to reduce the number of missions in view of economic contraction and workload, this arrangement is only short-term. Spokesperson Chhetri clarified that as the country's economic capacity grows, diplomatic presence will be re-expanded as needed in the coming days.
