World Indigenous Peoples Day Celebrated Globally

Kathmandu. Today, World Indigenous Peoples Day is being celebrated with various programs in different countries around the world with the objective of raising global awareness about the rights, identity, culture, and way of life of indigenous peoples and their problems.

The United Nations General Assembly decided on December 23, 1994, to celebrate August 9 every year as World Indigenous Peoples Day. The day was chosen because the first meeting of the United Nations Working Group on Indigenous Populations was held in Geneva on August 9, 1982.
