Flood Forecast Issued for Small Rivers

Kathmandu. The Flood Forecasting Division under the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has urged for caution, stating that there is a risk of flash floods in various small rivers across the country. According to the latest bulletin issued by the Division, the flow of major rivers of the country such as Koshi, Narayani, Bagmati, Karnali, and Mahakali, as well as their tributaries, is currently below the alert level. The Division has also stated that the water level in the Kankai, Kamala, Babai, Eastern Rapti, and Western Rapti rivers is currently normal. Although there is no immediate major crisis in the large rivers, the flow in small rivers and streams is likely to increase rapidly. Today, a significant increase in water flow is estimated particularly in small rivers flowing through Jhapa, Ilam, Panchthar, Taplejung, Tehrathum, Sankhuwasabha, Nawalparasi West, Rupandehi, Kailali, Kanchanpur, and surrounding districts. Residents in the coastal areas have been advised to remain vigilant as there is a 'medium risk' of flash floods in those areas. This risk is expected to expand further in the next two days. The Division forecasts that the flow in most small rivers flowing through Koshi, Madhesh, Bagmati, Gandaki, and Lumbini provinces may suddenly increase tomorrow and the day after. During the same period, there is a possibility of flash floods in some small rivers and streams in Karnali and Sudurpaschim provinces, so settlements along the banks of small rivers in various parts of the country will need to exercise special caution for the next three days.
