Bioengineered Chewing Gum Shows Promise Against Head and Neck Cancers

Washington D.C. Cancer is a serious disease. Its treatment is considered complex compared to other diseases.
But researchers have created a type of bioengineered chewing gum that, when chewed, significantly reduces the risk of head and neck cancers. The chewing gum developed by researchers at the University of Pennsylvania reduced the amount of human papillomavirus (HPV) by up to 93 percent in saliva samples and up to 80 percent in mouthwash samples during testing. This research team was led by Henry Daniel from the university's School of Dental Medicine. The study's findings have been published in 'Scientific Reports'.
