Nepal's Prisons Overcrowded by 43%, Management Department Initiates Measures

There are 73 prisons across the country. Currently, there are a total of 27,798 inmates in all prisons in Nepal. The number of inmates in prison is 43 percent more than the capacity of the prison. Although there has been a long-standing debate about reducing the pressure of inmates, the pressure has not decreased.

The Department of Prison Management under the Ministry of Home Affairs has been working to reduce the pressure of inmates in prisons and build physical structures. However, with the physical structure construction happening at a snail's pace, it seems it will take many years to reduce the pressure.
