Nepal's Prisons Overcrowded by 43%, New Facilities Underway

Kathmandu. There are 73 prisons across the country. Prisoners convicted by the court and detainees ordered to be held for trial are kept in prisons. According to the data of the Prison Management Department, there are currently 27,798 inmates in prisons across the country.
The government is experimenting with a new system in the jail system to reduce the pressure of inmates by keeping them on parole. Inmates on remand according to court verdicts started being kept on parole from 2081. According to the Criminal Offenses (Sentencing and Implementation) Act-074, inmates can stay outside of detention according to the decision of the parole board.
