Draft Animal Welfare Bill draws criticism over weak animal protection provisions

Animal rights advocates have objected to the government’s draft Animal Services and Animal Welfare Bill, arguing that it focuses on livestock production, trade and administrative management rather than protecting animal rights and welfare.

They say the legislation gives priority to production-oriented policies instead of making animal welfare the law’s fundamental objective. The activists have urged the government to draft a separate, independent and comprehensive Animal Welfare Act that meets international standards.
