Transborder Disaster Governance

A sudden, highly volcanic, and debris-laden surge in the Bhote Koshi and Trisuli River tore through the Timure customs border point in Rasuwa and its adjoining riverside settlements, sending shockwaves across the country yesterday. While Timure served as the immediate entry point along the Nepal-China border, the destructive force of this flash flood rapidly cascaded downstream, heavily impacting infrastructure and riverside communities across Nuwakot and Dhading, and extending its critical effects all the way to Chitwan along the Narayani basin. What made this occurrence particularly striking was that no heavy rainfall or cloudburst events were recorded on either side of the border prior to the incident. The violent deluge, originating entirely from the high-altitude upper catchments in Tibet, swept down with immense momentum, inflicting severe physical damage on infrastructure and downstream human settlements.
