Indigenous Artisan Communities: Beyond Oppression to Civilization Building

The history of Nepal's indigenous artisan communities is not just a story of oppression. It is also a story of labor, skill, creativity, knowledge, and civilization building. Artisans, who have been working with metal, clay, wood, leather, cloth, and other natural materials for generations, have shaped the physical and cultural life of Nepali society. They made tools, musical instruments, jewelry, utensils, agricultural implements, construction materials, and various handicraft items.

The irony is that society used their labor and benefited from their skills. However, it did not give them equal respect, opportunity, and decision-making power. This historical paradox remains at the center of the question for indigenous artisans and Dalit communities today.
