Artificial Lake Near Nepal-China Border Starts Overflowing, Posing Flood Risk

Rasauwa. An artificial lake formed by a landslide near the Nepal-China border, above the Gyirong (Kerung) pass in Tibet, has started overflowing. According to Chinese state media CCTV, the overflow of water from the lake over the dam has created a new and serious risk of flooding on both the Nepal and Tibet sides. After the severe landslide last Wednesday, this lake formed by the blockage of the river was at risk of bursting at any time, leading the Chinese side to suspend rescue operations earlier. As the lake has started to overflow, the possibility of sudden floods in the lower downstream areas has increased, spreading fear of significant damage to Rasuwagadhi and surrounding settlements on the Nepal side. Considering the potential risks and security situation, security deployment has been intensified in Rasuwa. SSP Dip Shamsher Jabra of the Nepal Police deployed in Rasuwa informed that the lake has started to overflow and vigilance is being maintained in the coastal areas.
