Kathmandu. Japan's Meteorological Agency has issued the highest level emergency warning for landslides on an island south of the capital Tokyo following continuous heavy rainfall.
Residents have been urged to exercise extreme caution due to increased risk of landslides and other natural disasters caused by heavy rainfall. According to the Meteorological Agency, 381 millimeters of rain fell on Niijima Island in the 24 hours leading up to 5:20 AM local time on Monday. Officials stated that excessive rainfall in a short period weakens the ground and increases the possibility of landslides.
