Myanmar At A Crossroads

The rare public appearance of Myanmar's Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi at a meeting with representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) last Monday appears to be a calculated stunt staged by the junta leadership rather than a genuine shift toward change. This turn of events has come at a time when the military regime is facing unprecedented international isolation, sweeping economic sanctions and devastating territorial losses to rebels in the ongoing internal conflict. This small act of goodwill, therefore, may hardly be able to rescue the military junta from the deepening crisis it is in.
