Sunsari Violence Highlights Deep-Seated Distrust and Communal Polarization

Sunsari district is a district of ethnic and religious diversity. The violence that occurred on July 10 in Dewangunj-3, Kapantaganj, resulting in the deaths of three local youths and affecting the entire Madhesh region, highlights its sensitivity. This incident was not just a local clash but also an expression of decades of suppressed distrust, weak state presence, and growing communal polarization.

A 7-point agreement was reached between the families of the deceased and the government on July 15. Points such as initiating the process of declaring the deceased as 'martyrs', providing 10 lakh compensation each, offering employment to family members, and building a memorial park helped to defuse immediate anger and the crisis of body management. But can these agreements alone extinguish the fire of distrust sown in Kapantaganj? This is a serious question.
