Manohara Slum Area Becomes Ruins After Eviction

Kathmandu. The Manohara area, which had some tension three weeks ago when bulldozers ran over slum settlements along the river banks of the Kathmandu Valley, has now become ruins and deserted. The government is being criticized for the treatment of the displaced families from settlements like Manohara and the lack of proper management. While there is a challenge of managing those families, there is an equal possibility that the demolished settlements will also bring environmental challenges and disasters.

The government does not seem to be very interested in managing the concrete structures built along the river banks after they were demolished. Leaving the concrete dust and structures as they are not only degrades air quality, but there is also an equal possibility that the debris of these cement structures will mix with the river or be dumped. The residents living here have already taken away or sold materials that could be reused or sold, but leaving the remaining materials as they are has further increased the possibility of environmental pollution.
