Biratnagar. The Genji movement, which began with a strong slogan of good governance and against corruption, took a violent turn on August 23 and 24 last year. During the protests, more than 76 protestors lost their lives across the country, and hundreds were injured. Major national structures including Singha Durbar, Supreme Court, and Parliament House were set ablaze. Even leaders' private homes were reduced to ashes.
Some business complexes and private schools were also set on fire. The KP Sharma Oli-led government, formed by the Congress-UML alliance, collapsed after that destructive movement. A new government was formed under the leadership of former Chief Justice Sushila Karki. That government conducted elections on March 7. The Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) emerged victorious with a huge mandate from the elections.
