GenZ Martyrs' Day Observed Nationwide

Kathmandu. GenZ Martyrs' Day was observed across the country on Tuesday with various programs. This day was celebrated on the occasion of the completion of one year of the GenZ movement that took place on Bhadra 23 last year. The government had decided to observe Bhadra 23 as GenZ Martyrs' Day in memory and honor of the youth who lost their lives during the movement. The movement was held with demands for corruption control, political accountability, reform in public institutions, job creation, equality of opportunity, transparency, and participation of the new generation in state governance. 76 people lost their lives during the movement, and the government has declared 45 people as martyrs. On the occasion of the day, the GenZ Martyrs' Family Welfare Society organized a special program in New Baneshwor, Kathmandu. The program was attended by the Home Minister, government ministers, and members of the martyrs' families. During the event, the martyrs' families demanded strict legal action against those involved in the repression of the movement. Basanta Kishore Shrestha, Vice-President of the GenZ Martyrs' Family Welfare Society, said that the current government must bring those involved in the repression to justice without fail. Mentioning that many works could not be done due to the lack of public mandate with the previous interim government, he said, 'The current government is a strong government with a two-thirds majority. Therefore, we are confident that it will work in accordance with the spirit of GenZ.' The martyrs' families expressed their gratitude for the affection shown by the current government towards the feelings and contributions of the martyrs' families and the injured. They also expressed confidence that the government would move forward with determination for corruption-free governance, good governance, and the prosperity of the country. Due to the said movement, the then government was dissolved and an interim government led by former Chief Justice Sushila Karki was formed. The current government led by Balendra Shah, formed after the elections, decided to observe Bhadra 23 as GenZ Martyrs' Day and declared a public holiday across the country.
