Trump Expresses Disappointment with NATO Allies Over Iran Tensions

Washington DC. US President Donald Trump has revealed that he used the military tensions with Iran as an opportunity to test the role of NATO allies, expressing great disappointment with their role. He also stated that his old doubts about the credibility of the alliance were further strengthened after not receiving expected support from allies in the US campaign against Iran. Speaking to reporters after a meeting with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara, the capital of Turkey, before the NATO summit, Trump said that while the US is always ready to help others, he wanted to test whether allied nations would stand by the US when needed. "I was very disappointed with NATO. We didn't need their help, but I was testing whether they would actually stand up for the US," he said. Trump expressed dissatisfaction that some allied nations did not allow the use of their airports for US actions against Iran and refused to provide military assistance in securing the strategic Strait of Hormuz. He reiterated the view that partner nations, who have been under the US security umbrella since World War II, must prove their commitment through actions. While expressing personal respect for Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Trump admitted that there was some bitterness in bilateral relations because she did not support the US strategy regarding the Strait of Hormuz and Iran. "She is a good person, but she made a mistake on this issue," Trump said. He claimed that the US has abundant energy resources and does not need to rely on the Strait of Hormuz, but is active for global stability. He stated that Europe is more dependent in terms of energy supply, hence the reluctance of some countries was clear. Trump, however, praised Turkish President Erdogan, saying his understanding of the regional situation related to Iran was important. He said that Turkey played a constructive role in diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions without direct military involvement. Trump described the US action against Iran not as a full-scale war but as a targeted military operation and an operation for nuclear disarmament. He mentioned that Turkey has sufficient military capability, but Ankara has deliberately adopted a policy of not engaging in direct war.
