Former IGP Om Bikram Rana's Pension Case Set for Supreme Court Hearing

Kathmandu. A hearing has been scheduled at the Supreme Court for the writ petition filed by former Inspector General of Nepal Police, Om Bikram Rana. Rana had filed a writ in the Supreme Court stating that his pension was stopped after being convicted in a corruption case. The writ is scheduled for hearing in the joint bench of Justices Nripadhwaj Niroula and Meghraj Pokharel. Earlier, the joint bench of Justices Kumar Chudal and Abdul Aziz Musalman had issued an interim order not to implement the letter of the Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) to stop the pension. The CIAA had written a letter directing the Pension Management Office not to provide pension to Rana after it was determined that there was a scam in the procurement of logistical supplies for the police mission to Sudan. After the pension was stopped following the CIAA's letter, former IGP Rana filed a writ in the Supreme Court on July 18, 2081 (Bikram Sambat). The agreement to procure logistical supplies for Sudan was made during Rana's tenure. The Special Court and the Supreme Court have already convicted Rana and other involved individuals of corruption, determining that there was a scam in the agreement. The Special Court, on April 1, 2068 (Bikram Sambat), had convicted Rana and some other officials, determining that corruption had occurred. The Special Court had sentenced him to two years in prison and a fine of Rs 170,608,24. After the Special Court acquitted some individuals, the CIAA appealed to the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court delivered the final verdict in the case on April 17, 2074 (Bikram Sambat). The joint bench of then Chief Justice Sushila Karki and Justice Bishwambhar Prasad Shrestha of the Supreme Court, in its verdict, convicted Rana and some other officials. The court upheld the Special Court's decision to sentence them to two years in prison but reduced the fine to Rs 50,000.
