Devastating events not only leave a trail of death and destruction but also lasting psychological scars on the survivors. This is particularly the case with the survivors who have seen the lives of their loved ones brutally cut short, as well as the children left orphaned and so left in the lurch. The doomsday-like August 26 Bhotekoshi flood has not only laid waste to great many lives, infrastructure, and property, but it has also affected a staggering number of children. According to UNICEF, the lives of around 22,100 children have been upended across Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Gorkha, and Tanahun districts. Among them, 21 are children with disabilities. Preliminary government data show that 1,233 children – 361 girls and 601 boys – are currently staying at 30 holding centres in Rasuwa, Dhading and Kathmandu, out of which 261 girls and 331 boys are staying with one or both parents, while 439 children, 222 girls and 217 boys, are separated from their parents. And 10 children have been orphaned.
