Human Rights Commission Holds Former PM KP Sharma Oli Responsible for Genji Movement Deaths

Kathmandu. The National Human Rights Commission has held the then Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli responsible for the loss of life and property during the Genji movement on August 23 and 24. The commission's investigation committee's report, prepared regarding the human rights violations during the Genji movement on August 23 and 24, has held the then Prime Minister Oli responsible. The movement, which started due to the ban on various social media, which was an attack on the freedom of expression given by the constitution, became violent, and 19 people died from security personnel's bullets, the commission mentioned in the report. 'In a situation where 23 more people died during the treatment of those injured by security personnel's bullets on August 23 and 24, it was not possible to say that the then Prime Minister was not responsible solely on the basis of the claim that the Prime Minister did not order to shoot,' the commission's report stated. The commission stated that even though all security mechanisms except the Nepali Army appeared to have failed in the security situation analysis until the evening of August 23 and the afternoon of August 24, the Council of Ministers did not make any decision regarding seeking the army's help.
