Police Chief Calls for AI-Powered CCTV to Enhance Kathmandu's Traffic Management

Kathmandu. Inspector General of Nepal Police Dan Bahadur Karki has stated that the use of technology, including AI-enabled CCTV, should be increased to make Kathmandu's traffic management technology-friendly. He said that a scientific and systematic system should be developed to end the situation where traffic police stand between vehicles, taking risks and managing traffic by waving their hands. Speaking at the 34th anniversary of the Kathmandu Metropolitan Police Force on Sunday, Karki said that with the installation of AI-enabled CCTV, bus stops, bus parks, parking stations, and overall traffic management should be systematized. He emphasized the need to make footpath management, parking management, and emergency rescue systems more effective in collaboration with the Kathmandu Metropolitan City. Karki said that with the increasing population, urbanization, and traffic congestion in the capital, collaboration between local levels and Nepal Police is also necessary for the management of public spaces, waste management, environmental challenges, heritage conservation, and disaster management. He said that there are challenges in waste management from the point of production to the final management site, and effective solutions should be sought in the future. Informing that cooperation is ongoing between Nepal Police and local levels in the construction of physical structures and security management, Karki said that correspondence is being sent to all 753 local levels through the Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Land Management, Cooperatives and Poverty Alleviation, and Ministry of Federal Affairs and General Administration to coordinate with Nepal Police. He said that local levels should provide land and buildings as needed to Nepal Police, assist in the construction and maintenance of police offices, provide vehicles and disaster rescue equipment, and assist in the installation and expansion of CCTV. He said that such cooperation will further connect police services and metropolitan police services effectively. Karki praised the work being done by the metropolis to ensure citizens' right to walk on clean roads and use footpaths without obstruction. He said that the performance of the metropolis in urban management of the capital also reflects the overall standard of urban management. He said, 'Correspondence is being sent to all 753 local levels through the Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Land Management, Cooperatives and Ministry of Federal Affairs and General Administration to cooperate and coordinate with Nepal Police on issues including the construction of physical structures. In this context, we also need to give more attention to the management of security personnel's housing, transportation, and necessary resources by prioritizing security structures.' Emphasizing that the metropolis and Nepal Police should work together with more plans in the coming days, Karki expressed the expectation that cooperation will continue to make traffic management, footpath management, and emergency response systems technology-friendly and systematic.
