Ukraine Fortifies Northern Border with Belarus Amidst Ongoing Conflict

Kyiv. More than four years after Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine from Belarusian territory, Ukraine continues to strengthen its northern border with Russia's close ally. The once busy border crossing between the two countries, where ordinary people used to move freely, has now turned into a sensitive area filled with exclusion zones, security barriers, and landmines. Roads along the 1,084-kilometer Ukraine-Belarus border are covered with nets to block drones for long distances. Sharp wire fences and anti-tank concrete obstacles called 'dragon's teeth' have also been constructed in the border area. The Associated Press (AP) visited the border region in northern Ukraine earlier this month. During that visit, it was reported that Ukraine had demanded that Belarus close communication relay stations used by Russia to extend drone reach and attack Ukrainian cities. According to Ukrainian officials, tensions between the two countries have somewhat eased after Belarus fulfilled this demand. However, even though there are no clear signs of increased Russian military presence in Belarus, Ukraine continues to strengthen border security, considering potential risks. Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has stated that his country has no plans to send troops to war unless attacked. However, local residents living in the border area are concerned about the possibility of Belarus becoming more involved in Russia's war. The security structures built in the border area for the locals are not only a reminder of the early days of the war but also a signal of Ukraine's preparedness for any future situation. Ukrainian border guards are patrolling 24 hours a day using armored vehicles, drones, and other surveillance systems. According to officials, as Belarus is Russia's closest military partner, the construction of additional security structures in the border area will remain a priority in the coming days.
