Jamel Area Flooding Caused by Insufficient Drainage Capacity, Not Clogged Drains

Kathmandu. The main reason for the Jamel area of Kathmandu becoming waterlogged as soon as the monsoon begins is not due to garbage accumulated in the drains, but due to the systemic capacity (flow capacity) of the drains not matching, it has been found. This fact came to light during a joint site inspection on Friday, July 15, by officials from the Department of Roads, the Disaster Management Authority, and drinking water-related bodies, following the directive of the acting mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City, Sunita Dangol.

During the inspection, the team concluded that the Jamel area gets flooded every year because the pipes for draining the large volume of water coming from various directions are too narrow.
