Aiden Markram Downplays Lucknow Super Giants Captaincy Speculation

Lucknow. Aiden Markram is seen as the main contender to lead Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL), but he said on Sunday night that there are other 'excellent leaders' in the team.

Rishabh Pant stepped down as Lucknow's captain in May after finishing the season at the bottom of the points table. He has since been traded to Delhi Capitals with Kuldeep Yadav.

Lucknow is yet to announce a new captain. Markram is seen as the main option due to his experience as captain for South Africa's T20 team and other RPSG Group teams.

When asked by Cricinfo about the possibility of leading Lucknow next year, Markram said, 'I don't know anything about it. They can make whatever decision is best for the team. We have some good leaders in the team, so I am not too worried about it. I am sure whoever gets the responsibility will do a good job. But no thought has been given to it yet.'

Australia's T20 captain Mitchell Marsh is also a strong contender for captaincy for Lucknow's 2026 team. Nicholas Pooran has also captained the West Indies before. Lucknow may also bring in a new captain from the IPL mini-auction, but there may not be many options available.

Markram said this after leading Manchester Super Giants at The Oval on Sunday night. He said he is enjoying the opportunity to captain in the 100-ball format. He said, 'It has its own challenges, but it's been a very good experience. I've thoroughly enjoyed it. Having players like Jos Buttler alongside me has helped a lot, he's helped me a lot.'

Discussing the format of the game, he added, 'It's a very fast-paced game. The rule of bowling 10 balls from one end still feels challenging. Sometimes it feels like 5 balls are over, but then you remember there are still 5 balls left. The competition is excellent and the standard is high.'

After scoring only 67 runs in the first four innings of The Hundred, Markram found form on Sunday night with a quickfire half-century, although the team suffered a heavy defeat. Manchester, who started the season with two consecutive wins, have now lost three games in a row. They must win all their remaining three games to reach the knockout stage.

Speaking about his performance, Markram said, 'I was struggling, but tonight was a bit better. The pitch was definitely good. When the pitch is good and you are struggling to score runs, there is a bit more eagerness. So I was very excited for today's game.'
