Chhurpi, produced from the milk of cows, yaks, and buffaloes, is an indigenous hard cheese from the Himalayas, which Nepal has managed to convert into a highly profitable export item. Traditionally a homegrown delicacy, it is increasingly being marketed around the world as a dog treat in its natural form, fetching billions of rupees in export revenues and providing another avenue for earning money for the producers. To tap the growing demand, a government strategy for five years has been launched. Chhurpi for dogs was first made in Nepal back in 2007 but exports have seen tremendous growth since then. Dog and cat food exports have increased from 276 tonnes in 2014/15 to 2,610 tonnes in 2024/25. Earnings have increased to about Rs. 4.5-4.8 billion per year. Over 400 industries manufacture chhurpis and export around two million kilograms per year with over 80 per cent of manufacturing done in the Koshi Province.
