General Secretary Pokharel Condemns Journalist Arrest as Illegal and Anti-Press Freedom

Kathmandu. CPN UML General Secretary Shankar Pokharel has said that arresting journalists on the basis of writing or publishing news is completely illegal and a step against press freedom. General Secretary Pokharel stated this in a status on social media Facebook immediately after the police arrested Janastha weekly editor Kishor Shrestha on Wednesday.

General Secretary Pokharel has strongly opposed the unjust and vindictive arrest of Shrestha. He stated that when there is disagreement with the source or subject matter of the news, the way to refute it, go to the Press Council, or seek legal remedy is open, and Shrestha's arrest is a step against press freedom.
