Kathmandu. A decision has been made to tighten the border between Nepal and India. The Joint Working Group (JW G) meeting between Nepal and India on border management made this decision. The 14th meeting of the JW G was held in Dehradun, India on August 20 and 21. The meeting decided to facilitate cross-border movement of citizens of both countries, tighten surveillance on citizens of third countries, and make disaster management and district-level coordination meetings effective, the Ministry of Home Affairs informed. The ministry also informed that both sides have agreed to increase security surveillance in sensitive areas along the border using modern technology such as CCTV. Similarly, discussions were held on controlling encroachment and unauthorized use of the no-man's land, full operation and utilization of integrated check posts, and mutual legal assistance. The Nepali side raised issues of new security challenges including cybercrime and cross-border digital fraud. The meeting reviewed the implementation of the decisions of the 13th meeting held in Pokhara, Nepal in 2025 and discussed strengthening immediate information exchange between relevant bodies to control cross-border crime, drugs, banned medicines, wildlife and human trafficking, counterfeit currency, and arms smuggling. Joint Secretary Anand Kafle of the Ministry of Home Affairs led the Nepali delegation, while Joint Secretary Mrs. Pousumi Basu of the Ministry of Home Affairs of India led the Indian delegation. Discussions were also held regarding Nepal's interest and views on India-China trade via Lipulek Pass. However, no decision was made on that issue, sources said. 'Discussions were held on the issues of Lipulek, Kalapani, Limpiyadhura, but this JW G does not have the authority to make decisions,' the source said.
