Madhesh Province Assembly Session Halted Amidst Government Inaction

Janakpurdham. Parliamentary activities are stalled in the Madhesh Province, where the three-party alliance has continued, unlike other provinces where the government formation process has affected the Provincial Assembly meetings. The parliamentary activities have been halted after the Provincial Chief, on the recommendation of the government, ended the budget session. Lawmakers are also dissatisfied, stating that the provincial assembly session was abruptly ended at a time when the government's attention should have been drawn to public concerns such as floods, waterlogging, rising prices of consumer goods, and delays in development work. With the Provincial Assembly unable to convene, lawmakers are idle, and the role of holding the government accountable on public issues has also become inactive. The last meeting of the Provincial Assembly was held on Asar 31 to pass the budget. No meeting has been held since then. In a situation where no meeting could be held, the Provincial Chief suddenly issued a notice on Bhadra 6, informing that the Provincial Assembly session had ended on the recommendation of the provincial government. The Speaker of the Madhesh Province Assembly, Ram Ashish Yadav, stated that despite repeatedly urging Chief Minister Krishna Prasad Yadav to run the Provincial Assembly meeting, the government has not shown interest. According to him, the Chief Minister has been repeatedly urged to provide business to the house. Speaker Yadav, arguing that new laws need to be made and some old laws need to be amended, clarified that he himself does not have information about when the Provincial Assembly meeting will be held next. The Speaker, emphasizing that the government should do two things immediately, said, 'One, the Madhesh Province Assembly should be given bills, and business. Second, development plans should be operated based on the budget passed.' He clarified that the Chief Minister has assured that efforts will be made for the session to operate within the next 10-15 days, and he has repeatedly urged the Chief Minister to be sensitive to this matter. Jitedra Prasad Sonel, a former Chief Minister and leader of the Janata Samajwadi Party, accused the government's negligence of causing the Provincial Assembly meeting to be stalled. He told Ratopati, 'Currently, the public's issues, problems, and questions are being overshadowed across the province due to the government itself. Therefore, the government should immediately resume the session and focus on resolving those issues.' Sonel stated that the decision on when to hold the Provincial Assembly meeting and for how long it will run depends on the government. He said that if the Provincial Assembly meeting is conducted, the public's issues, provincial development, and all other matters will be brought into the house. 'In a democracy, changes in government, formation and breaking of alliances are normal processes, and they should not be exaggerated too much,' he said. 'The government here has been stable so far, so our point is that the session should be opened.' Former Home Minister of the Province, Rajkumar Lekhi, assessed that the government must be doing homework for the operation of the Provincial Assembly. He said, 'There is no disagreement among anyone that the Provincial Assembly should run and public issues should be raised. Well, why is the government delaying? It is not possible to say.' The Provincial Chief Surendra Lal Karna had issued a public notice on Friday night, announcing the end of the current budget session from 12 midnight, as per the decision of the Madhesh Province Council of Ministers, 35 days after the budget was passed.
