Global Media Covers Rasuwa Flood as Climate Change Indicator

Kathmandu. The devastating flash flood incident that occurred in the Timure-Rasuwagadhi area of Rasuwa district, Nepal on August 26th became a top international news story for leading global media outlets including BBC, Reuters, The Guardian, CNN, Al Jazeera, Global Times, The Times, and Financial Times within a few hours. The flood, which washed away settlements, roads, bridges, hydropower projects, and trade infrastructure in the Nepal-China border area, has been presented by global media not just as a local natural disaster, but as a new indicator of escalating extreme natural risks in the Himalayan region, climate change, and cross-border disasters.

Although initial reports of the incident varied regarding its cause, recent scientific analyses have strengthened the possibility that a large part of a glacier collapsed, sending ice, rocks, and sediment into the river, thereby generating a catastrophic flow. The US Geological Survey clarified that the 'seismic signal,' initially appearing like an earthquake, was likely caused by a massive landslide. Consequently, international media have intensified their efforts to find the scientific cause of the event alongside reporting on it.
