Displaced by Disaster, Madi’s Chepangs Face Violence and Human Trafficking

Marginalized communities who were repeatedly displaced by floods and landslides and settled in Madi, Chitwan, remain unsafe even in their current location. Living in extreme poverty, they are also at high risk of gender-based violence, labor exploitation and human trafficking.

Krishna Bahadur Chepang (72), living on the banks of the Parbi Stream in Madi Municipality-9, Chitwan, arrived here after being displaced for the sixth time. On the night of September 7, 1985, a flood and landslide in his ancestral home in Dhading left him without food or shelter. His series of displacements began that very night.
