The name of the book is George’s Marvelous Medicine. The writer of this book is Roald Dahl, and it is illustrated by Quentin Blake. This book has 104 pages. The genre is fiction.
Settings:
The story takes place mostly in George’s house. It is morning, and George is alone because his parents are not home. His mother has asked to give his grandma her medicine at 11 o’clock. The story takes place around different rooms in the house, like the bathroom where George mixes his special medicine and the kitchen where he cooks it. All the funny and crazy things happen within George’s house.
Plot:
In this story, George is a boy who is home alone while his parents are out. His mother has asked him to give his grandma her medicine at 11 o’clock. George doesn’t like his grandma because she is always rude and bossy. She tells him that she has magical powers and scares him by making up stories. She also tells him that he was growing too fast and calls him a useless boy. She keeps nagging him for small things and irritates him by asking him to repeat doing things.
Feeling frustrated and bored, George locks himself inside the kitchen and thinks about teaching his grandma a lesson. He decides to make his own special medicine to give to his grandma. He thinks of using strange things like slugs and insects. George goes to the bathroom and finds a big saucepan. He starts putting all kinds of weird ingredients into the saucepan, like lipstick, animal skin, and even foul pest. He mixes everything he sees around the house and then adds some brown paint for extra effect.
When the medicine is ready, George takes it to his grandma. After she drinks it, she starts to grow taller and taller, until she is as tall as a house! George is amazed and decides to test the medicine on other animals. He tries it on a chicken, and the chicken begins to fly. He tests it on more animals, and they all turn into birds.
George then decides to make a new batch of medicine, Marvelous Medicine Number Two, with different ingredients. He tests this new medicine on a hen, and her legs grow as long as a crane’s. He makes Marvelous Medicine Number Three, which makes another hen’s neck stretch out very long. Finally, George creates Marvelous Medicine Number Four, which makes his grandma get smaller and smaller until she returns to her normal size.
Character Analysis
George
In this story, George is a boy who likes to play tricks on his grandma. He is very creative and comes up with different funny medicines. Even though he is a bit mischievous, his clever ideas and experiments with the medicine show that he is smart. He also follows his parents’ instructions by not using the medicines they told him not to use on his own, which shows that he is obedient.
Grandma
In this story, Grandma is not very nice. She is always bossy and grumpy. Her behavior makes George want to play tricks on her. Her rude behavior makes the story funnier. The way she reacts towards the medicine is different from what I had expected because she calls herself to have some power instead of getting angry at George.
Recommendation and Rating
This book is very funny because George gave his grandma various medicines, causing her to keep growing taller and shorter. I also like it as it says in the beginning of the book that we should not try doing this kind of stuff at all. It can be a good time-pass for people who are bored. I rate this book 10/10.
