Bhisma Dwadashi

भीष्मो द्वादश्यां प्रयाति लोकान्
धर्मस्य स्तापनकर्तुरेव।
तस्मै नमः सत्यव्रताय भक्त्या
गङ्गासुतायाभिवन्दनं मे॥

Meaning:
"Bhishma Pitamaha attained the supreme abode on the Dwadashi tithi. I bow with devotion to him, who was dedicated to the establishment of righteousness, steadfast in his vows, and the son of the sacred Ganga."

Bhishma: The Symbol of Firm Resolve
Bhishma is one of the most renowned figures of the Mahabharata era. Known for his unwavering commitment to his vow of lifelong celibacy, his name continues to be revered in society even today. He took a solemn vow to ensure that the sons of his stepmother, Queen Satyavati, would inherit the throne, thereby renouncing his own claim and committing to lifelong celibacy.

In other words, he declared that he would never marry, and he remained steadfast in this vow throughout his life. The term "Bhishma Pratigya" is used to describe an unbreakable vow, signifying absolute dedication to a purpose. Even today, when someone takes a resolute pledge, it is often referred to as a "Bhishma Pratigya."

Magha Shukla Dwadashi is observed as "Bhishma Dwadashi." This day is associated with the Mahabharata era and the steadfast Bhishma. It is believed that Bhishma Pitamaha, who had the boon of choosing the time of his death, left his mortal body after the onset of Uttarayana (the sun’s northward journey). The Pandavas performed his final rites on this day.

The Bhishma Panchak Vrat, which begins on Bhishma Ashtami, concludes on this day. Devotees who observe the Bhima Ekadashi Vrat a day earlier break their fast with due rituals by worshiping Lord Vishnu. On Bhishma Dwadashi, it is customary to recite the Vishnu Sahasranama Stotra and engage in devotional songs in praise of Lord Vishnu.

Bhishma, born as Devavrata, was the son of King Shantanu of the Chandravanshi dynasty and Goddess Ganga. His vow, wisdom, determination, and life continue to inspire humanity, imparting profound lessons.

Wishing everyone a blessed and auspicious Bhishma Dwadashi!
