Mahendranagar. Local administration has tightened its grip after an increase in the illegal import of electric scooters by evading customs in Kanchanpur. In the last month alone, police have seized 12 electric scooters illegally brought into Nepal from India and operating without registration, and handed them over to the customs office. The Nepal Police and Armed Police Force have been increasingly seizing new electric scooters from various places in Kanchanpur, which has an open border, and handing them over to the customs office for necessary action. Customs Officer of Kanchanpur Customs Office, Chakradev Bhatt, said that importing scooters to evade customs is against the prevailing law, and the police are active in controlling it. He said, "The scooters handed over here will be auctioned after completing legal procedures. To prevent new scooters from entering illegally, activeness has been increased with the help of the police administration." He added, "Discussions will be held at the administrative level to find a solution regarding the registration of imported scooters." According to him, about five thousand electric scooters have been imported in Kanchanpur in the last 10 years. District Police Office Kanchanpur Spokesperson, Deputy Superintendent of Police Tekbahadur Rawat, said that strict action is being taken against illegally imported electric scooters. He said, "The risk of accidents has increased due to scooters brought in by evading customs and operated without registration. Arrangements are being made to bring all electric scooters into the registration process and operate them." While the sale of electric two-wheeled vehicles is on the rise in Nepal, the management of scooters purchased from the Indian market and brought in without paying customs and operated without registration has become challenging in Kanchanpur. With the increase in the trend of illegally importing and operating scooters worth lakhs of rupees without registration, the local administration has made its surveillance more effective.
