Kathmandu has always been something more than a city of houses and roads. For generations, its neighbourhoods, or toles as they are known locally, were tight-knit communities where people knew each other, children played together, festivals were celebrated together, and neighbours helped each other in good and bad times. But today this culture is slowly dying out as rapid urbanisation, migration and changing lifestyles shape the capital of Nepal. This change is evident to many residents not only in terms of buildings, but also in the loosening of social ties.
