Seeds of prosperity: China–Himalaya food security

As climate change, geopolitical uncertainty and disruptions to global supply chains continue to test the world’s food systems, agriculture has grown into far more than a domestic economic sector. It has become a vital instrument of diplomacy, sustainable development and international cooperation. Among the countries advancing this vision most consistently is China, which has drawn on four decades of agricultural modernisation to build partnerships spanning Asia, Africa and Latin America. Nepal, bound to China by a shared Himalayan border and centuries of cultural exchange, stands today as one of the clearest examples of how agricultural cooperation can strengthen food security, uplift rural livelihoods and deepen bilateral ties.
China’s agricultural transformation ranks among the most remarkable achievements of the modern era. With less than ten percent of the world’s arable land, the country feeds nearly one-fifth of humanity, having become a global leader in grain, vegetable, fruit, aquaculture, tea and livestock production. This success reflects sustained investment in agricultural research, mechanisation, irrigation, hybrid seed technology and digital farming, policies that have lifted hundreds of millions out of poverty while steadily raising productivity.
